Touched down yesterday at around 2 o'clock. Long flight back but stepping back on Singaporean soil wasn't as gratifying as i expected. I sound like a bored whore. =)
Basically, Wallaby was... a mixture of everything.
The workload was as expected, crazy, crazy, krazy. But hey, call me psycho or what, i actually LIKED doing rigging and packing instead of typing and printing and laminating and stressing myself out. The prof test was over in a jiffy and i felt we actually did reasonably well. Other than that, the rest of the trip was just rigging rigging rigging under the scorching hot sun.
Injuries were commonplace. 1 sent home because his fingers were fractured, i think. The other, an unfortunate victim of ' i want the best seat in the vehicle' game. Or so it appears.. Cuts here and there. Bruises, on body and ego, too were common. I was not spared either. I underwent a minor foot operation for an in-grown toenail and endured so-called severe ulceration on my lips for the entire month. Ah, but heck it, what cannot kill you only makes you stronger. I hope.
Friends. Sounds corny but the cohort we have, however small it is, is special. Being here makes everybody here already a hero. ( Courtesy of Kevin ) Bathing together everyday without the normal barriers. Laughing and joking about the diameters of *insert anything you want* and so on and so forth under the gush of hot refreshing water definitely made the cold and lonely nights more bearable. Being through the shit we went through made us grow up and gel. 'Firms' developed special meaning. Hahaha. All of us are so different but we are slowly melting in the bubbling cauldron we were inexplicably thrown into. Messy, topsy-turvy, cool, good, quiet, uppity, small, cheerful, wrong, daydream, nonsense, chatterbox, tickle.
Gambling never was bigger to me than it was in Australia. Slot machines were as commonplace as 7-11s in Singapore. Keno now meant more than that game run by a red dinosaur in Neopets. The music of victory emerging from the colorful machine and coin clanking rang loud and long in my ears. Enticed, is an understatement. Si kee puay was another new game i picked up. Now though, back in Singapore probably means gambling's reduced to the occasional punt or two at Singapore Pools and new year gatherings.
Animal facts i picked up in Australia.
1) Emus are the most common bird species you will find in their wild.
2) Kangaroos and Wallabies are sitting ducks if you wish to kill a few. Drive and you're bound to meet one of them. They will stand real straight, staring at the oncoming roadrage with beady black eyes, not knowing impending danger and stone. And i mean Stone.
3) The Koala has officially taken over the Panda as my favorite favorite animal.
4) An attractive female zookeeper cuddling a Koala is definitely a sight to behold.
Slight digression. Somehow, pretty girls i chanced upon in Australia had something to do with animals. In Red Rooster there was one. In the wildlife reserve there was yet another one. Maybe i should start becoming an animal lover.
Food in Australia was pretty pricey. Breaka is probably THE milk over there. Picked up a strong liking for ginger ale over there thanks to Mr Uppity. Beef rissole's actually like a giant beef ball. Coolio. Spuds are actually as tasty as they are flashy. Btw, for those as sua gu as me before i actually tried spuds, Spuds are actually baked potatoes with sinful toppings like sour cream, bacon, onions and stuff. Lots and lots of them! Chicken Cesar Spud. Yummy. Oh Australians are also big on their fast food. Red Rooster, Hungry Jacks, KFC, Macs. They probably have it all. While over there, i fell in love with this thing from Darryl Lea. Its like a bar of white chocolate, peanuts and marshmallows. The combination is heavenly, i tell you. Problem is, you'll probably have a tough time burning off those carbs later on. Peanut brittle is good, too. =)
Considering we share the same sky, it's amazing how different the two skylines are. Over there, the clouds are so white and pastel-like. Even when it's grey and threatening, the sky and clouds never seem to mix as much as ours. They are like different entities, if you get what i mean. At night, the pastel white clouds seem to disperse into millions of shiny shiny particles. I realised then that the night sky they paint in cartoons isn't exaggerated. The sky's probably littered with stars more than what East Coast is with garbage. I really enjoyed the couple of occasions I just paused to admire all that was above me. All that was lacking then was probably another presence? The moon's also pretty big over there, and bright too.
Did I miss out anything? Drop me a tag if i did. Meanwhile, i hope this revived blog will not sound so sordid anymore! If life changes, this changes too. So please change, life.
