Being slammed by movie critics all over Singapore, Money No Enough 2 was panned as a failure as compared to its predecessor. Being a self-confessed Singapore movie buff, i decided to give it a chance though together. I have always loved the way Jack Neo's movies help to bring up the common peoples' grievances and problems. Daring to chastise our government, even taking crude digs and swipes in their faces. The former's predecessor, the I Not Stupid series, even Homerun, all of them were movies and films that tugged at my innermost heartstrings. While blockbusters from Hollywood continue to thrill and delight audiences worldwide, the fact will always remain that these mega-money directors will never quite be able to create a film that feels so singapore-heartlandish.
Settling in the seats of the cinema with my family, the movie started off with a really farcical rendition of animation. While typically witty, it was painful watching animation of this quality when so much better ones are readily available elsewhere. Aside from several agonizing blatant adverts (especially pokka's white chrysanthemum tea), the show slowly grew in depth and stature. The characters in the show were developed and the ugly traits of Singaporeans started to surface. The story was unique in the sense Jack Neo dared to portray sensitive issues Singaporeans face. Scenes like the one where the mother was sitting on the toilet seat consuming her meal was so heart wrenching. Mainly about filial piety, how Jack Neo used Singapore to depict this predominantly awkward situation everybody faces was quite awesome. Though punctuated with chuckles and laughter, the general mood in the cinema, as the show rumbled on, was sombre and even so quiet at one point i could literally hear people weeping. I have to admit there was this one hundredth of a tear drop in my eyes at one point but being a masculine Singaporean, i naturally used my eye vacuum cleaner to quickly suck it back in. At this point, i have to make it clear that i think partly why this movie had this impact on me was because the situation the characters in the movie faced is especially relevant to me now.
But take nothing away from this locally-produced movie. Jack Neo says he intends to come out with one similar production every 10 years. If that's the case, i'll sign up on a decade membership with golden village right now! Hahaha I seriously doubt this film will stir foreigners into praises but i have no qualms recommending this film to all Singaporeans out there, especially if you think you've neglected your parents somehow, sometime in your life. Knowing and understanding Hokkien is an added bonus of course! I really like how Jack Neo uses his movies to impart Singaporean-ish family values and how he injects those little witty ideas and phrases into conversations in the movie. Argh, hard to describe. All in all, Money No Enough 2 is an extremely viewable and personable family show.
