It's been some hiatus but I have this urge to blog stuff again.
Chinese New Year's really something. It's the one occasion where everything negative is nudged aside and positive vibes fill the air.
I think the lunar new year's just perfect for one to reward one's self amidst the uncertainty and confusion in the world right now. It provides a sanctuary for everyone to let their guard down and soak in the rich festive atmosphere. This applies to people of all ages.
Grandparents get a chance to dispel some of the loneliness they may face when Grandchildren flock to them screaming and reciting phrases after phrases of streaming auspicious and pleasant verses. Most importantly, it's the perfect time to once again re-experience family bonds and values with sons and daughters alike, along with their family.
Parents play the role of Santa. Hosting gatherings and distributing Ang Baos. But they too, are at the heart of the festivities because they are like the hub that provides links to all the people coming and going. I guess they get their kick and source of laughs when they see everybody laughing freely and enjoying themselves. Not to mention their customary source of 'bonding' when they partake in the annual inter-family, no age restrictions, gambling fiesta of the year.
I think the role of children and young adults need no elaboration. We get angbaos, we load out mouths with tubfuls of goodies and it's our big chance to become grow up and drink a sip of alcohol. We may even get the big break and enter a select band of 'childults'.
Gosh even maids get a chance to eat abalone and other pricey delicacies!
For weeks leading up to it, shopping addicts get some much needed reprieve. Banners after banners of 'promotions' and 'sales' litter the streets and glasses of retail outlets everywhere. Perfect excuse to get the top you've always wanted.
Friends get much needed excuses to get each other out. 'I haven't gotten my CNY clothes yet! Let's go shop till we drop!'
For once, mothers are more preoccupied with the plants in their balconies and gardens than their children and the friends they are hanging out with.
Phew, this lunar new year's really something. It's an early break to a ominous year so enjoy the festivities and feel-good vibe before we kick on and face the rest of the year.
Stay sturdy as an ox!
